Living in the (Senior) Moment
I have a question. What is a senior moment, and how do you know if you’ve had one? Okay, that’s 2 questions, but aside from the usual forgetting why you walked in a room or where you put your (fill in the blank), how do you know the difference between having a “moment” and just being plain ol’ distracted? I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. You see, it’s hard not to when you’ve seen a friend walk into a (perfectly obvious) screen door, or someone else put their shoes on the wrong feet (??), and I’m pretty sure some of you have had a random sighting of clothes being worn inside out! (In all fairness, I only did that twice)!
The fact is, a lot of people are super busy these days ‘and managing everyday life + all the extra during these times can be mentally and physically exhausting. I know how easy it is to get caught up juggling professional and personal to-do lists, and how being overwhelmed can lead to being distracted . . .
Take last night, for example. I ended up making a week’s worth of meals, all because I was talking on the phone, got carried away with the knife, and starting chopping and dicing like I was in the Tournament of Champions on the Food Network. I also forgot which meal I decided to make and ended up with so much food that my official taste tester and cheerleader hubby happily told me that the table looked like we were having a picnic! He also reminded me that I wouldn’t have to cook for a few days, so I suppose there’s that. 🤷🏽♀️
Despite the obvious benefits of having a LOT of food prepped and prepared, I wondered for a fleeting second if I had just had a “senior moment”? Cutting up a lot of vegetables is one thing, but cooking two different meals? It’s also not lost on me that as unfocused as I was on cooking, I couldn’t have been fully present in the conversation, either. Hmmm . . . maybe I’m not a little Miss Multitasker after all!
I have to admit that I didn’t think much more about it until this morning, when I was reminded what living in the moment is all about. I opened my eyes to the most beautiful coral-colored light coming into the bedroom, and immediately jumped up to look outside. The cloud formation and the colors were so striking that I ran downstairs to get a better view and to take a picture. In that short time, the clouds shifted, the rain started, and the view was gone . . . forever.
In trying to capture the moment, I missed out on living in it, and isn’t that supposed to be the point?
I believe that a little multitasking is good for your brain health (use it, or lose it). But what I know . . . is that living in the moment is about creating memories that will last a lifetime, and that’s good for your heart health! 💗
So . . . get to gettin’ and LIVE your best life, and here’s to having many, many more senior moments!
