You Are What You Eat??

If that saying was true, I’d be an extra in an M&M’s commercial right about now, because I LOVE ‘em!  Having been deprived of candy as a child, I’ve made up for it in adulthood, and now it’s become a really bad habit.  I use to rationalize that I would only buy M&M’s if they were on sale, but then I realized that any size package could be on sale, and that would justify my buying the next size up.  I know, I know . . . You finally realize you have a problem when you’re buying the family-size package at Costco – for yourself.

So, I’m trying to be more aware of my sugar intake, because as we all know by now, sugar is not our friend.  But, let me tell, I’m struggling!  Yesterday, I bought an air fryer and the first thing I did was make . . . donuts!!! WTH!  The thing is, I don’t eat meat, so I don’t fry anything, but I saw some random YouTube video that convinced me I could use an air fryer to cook food faster (and make French fries) and the next thing you know, we’re doing curbside pickup at the discount store.

But . . . I digress . . . We all know that sugar is addictive, and it’s in almost everything we eat. It’s also been linked to an increased risk for many diseases, including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.  When I started reading labels a few years ago, I realized I was getting all of my daily sugar “requirements” through the creamer I used in 2 cups of coffee!  (By the way, men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons [36 grams] and women, no more than 6 teaspoons [25 grams] of added sugar per day).

Even though our parents lived to be a 100-years old eating all these things and drinking from the garden hose, they didn’t have the preservatives, food dyes and other chemicals most of us ingest in today’s food.  I’m off the M&M’s for a while, but let me tell you . . . air-fried donuts are NOT the way to go, even if you do use almond flour.  I’ve downloaded a few healthy snacks and deserts and I’ll keep you posted on my favorites – and the not-so-much ones, too.

Meanwhile . . . I’ve scratched the itch, and I cannot . . . and will not . . . eat those donuts.  Nothing good can come from that, so PLEASE share your favorite, health-friendly dishes or snacks because this is mission critical!  Over and out!
